Several United Nations agencies are again sounding the alarm on the rapid deterioration of humanitarian conditions in much of Gaza and the civilian toll of more than a year of Israeli military operations.

Back-to-back UN reports have found famine is looming in the northern Gaza Strip as Israel continues an offensive which has killed mostly women and children in the locality.

The U.N. Human Rights Office said on Friday nearly 70% of the fatalities it has verified in the Gaza war were women and children, and condemned what it called a systematic violation of the fundamental principles of international humanitarian law.

The warning focused on the north comes as the Biden administration has set a mid-November deadline for Israel to deliver more humanitarian supplies to the enclave or face a cutoff of weapons aid.

Qatar has paused mediation efforts for a cease-fire in Gaza, saying it would resume only when the parties are serious enough to end “the brutal war.”
