Brett Baty, Francisco Alvarez and Ronny Mauricio have spent the last two games providing evidence the New York Mets might not need to look outside the organization for difference-making offensive players prior to the July 31 trade deadline.
The bottom of the Mets' lineup has struggled with a .612 OPS since June, but Monday showed why internal help might be coming.
After an extended stretch of poor performance, the Mets decided it was time to challenge Alvarez, unexpectedly demoting him to the minor leagues. It doesn’t take much to motivate Alvarez. Like the Energizer bunny, the 23-year-old is constantly on the move, pouring all of his energy into whatever task he’s doing.
July 21 - The New York Mets recalled catcher Francisco Alvarez from Triple-A Syracuse among several moves on Monday.
The Mets plan to recall Alvarez from Triple A ahead of their game Monday, league sources told The Athletic. The news, which was first reported by the New York Post, will give way for the 23-year-old catcher to earn another chance in the majors after responding to a demotion last month with improvements on offense and defense.
Francisco Alvarez hit a tying homer in his second game back from the minors and as the Mets rallied to beat the Angels.
