The Kentucky nonprofit said in the release the $2 million acquisition "will safeguard vital land for generations to come."

Boone Conservancy Executive Director Christy Noll said the effort to protect the property began more than a decade ago in 2012.

The property houses the ruins of Revolutionary War veteran Jacob Piatt's estate, and the graves of his family and people he enslaved. There are also three Native American sites on the land.

The Boone Conservancy bought 350 acres of property along the Ohio River in Petersburg, just across the Interstate 275 bridge from Lawrenceburg, Ind., with plans to preserve it for recreation and conservation.
