Lionsgate, the studio behind popular films series’ like The Hunger Games and John Wick, recently announced it’s letting a startup mine its catalog works with the goal of creating an AI model capable of creating storyboards and other pre- and post-production work.

The studio behind the “John Wick,” “Hunger Games,” and “Twilight” franchises just made a deal with an artificial intelligence startup to use its back catalog to build a custom AI model. It could be a tipping point.

Runway, a startup developing AI video tools, including video-generating systems, has inked a deal with Lionsgate to develop a custom model.

The Lionsgate deal establishes how AI is rapidly becoming an important tool throughout the filmmaking process, from initial conceptualization to final post-production.

Runway will use Lionsgate's vast catalog to train a model that the studio's filmmakers can then use to help make new content.

In return for allowing AI video company Runway access to its content catalog, Lionsgate will get a custom AI model.

The studio recently distanced itself from a Megalopolis trailer full of chatbot-generated quotes, but its new deal with Runway suggests it'll be embracing AI more openly in the future.
