Arch Manning, Texas and Matthew Caldwell

With Arch Manning trending to be sidelined during the upcoming Texas Longhorns game, a top weapon on the program delivered a bold message on backup quarterback Matthew Caldwell.
Caldwell found his way to Austin as Texas’ backup quarterback at the last minute. He entered the transfer portal out of Troy during the post-spring transfer window and didn’t commit to Texas until early May, landing with the Longhorns less than four months before the season started.
Texas football's backup QB Matthew Caldwell had to step in to cap the comeback against Mississipi State after Arch Manning exited.
The last time Caldwell started against a Power 4 opponent was last season on the road against the Iowa Hawkeyes. Kinnick Stadium is known for being a tough place to play, but Caldwell performed well.
Caldwell has become a microwave of sorts for Texas' kitchen. He came off the bench to snap off a 50-yard sprint against Sam Houston earlier this season and then became a cult hero during SEC play with a 26-yard throw late against Florida after Manning lost his helmet and that spine-tingling overtime dime to Mosley.
