A small band of lawmakers has lined up behind legislation that would curtail President Donald Trump ’s ability to impose tariffs, challenging the White House on what has emerged as a defining theme of his second term. One of them is Rep. Jeff Hurd, a Republican from Colorado.

Ever since President Trump announced he was slapping hefty tariffs on countries across the globe, he has been predicting they would force trading partners to sign major deals beneficial to the United States.

The nominee Tillis won’t support is Ed Martin, Trump’s pick for U.S. Attorney for Washington, D.C. Martin is currently serving as interim U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Tillis said he could not support Martin because he advocated for rioters who stormed the building on Jan. 6.

A key Republican senator said Tuesday he would oppose President Donald Trump’s pick to be U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, casting doubt on the confirmation chances of the controversial nominee who represented defendants charged in the 2021 attack on the Capitol.

House Republicans appear to be backing off some, but not all, of the steep reductions to the Medicaid program as part of their big tax breaks bill
