Rwanda-backed rebels have captured two major cities in Congo’s mineral-rich east after a major escalation in their yearslong fighting against Congolese forces.

The armed group reached the outlying districts of Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu province ... in Bukavu "hour-by-hour," and accused Rwanda of "plans of occupation, of pillages" in the east.

Rwanda-backed rebels have reached the center of east Congo’s second-largest city, Bukavu, and taken control of the South Kivu province administrative office.

On February 16th soldiers from M 23 marched single-file through the streets of Bukavu, eastern Congo’s second-largest city. The beleaguered remains of the Congolese army had retreated without a fight. Rebel fighters toting grenade-launchers and machine-guns took triumphant selfies in the city’s main square.

It is high time the South African National Defence Forces' (SANDF) holed up in a UN base camp in DR Congo's North Kivu Province returned home since they have no business in AFC/M23 rebel-held territory.

The Congo River Alliance, a group of rebel outfits including the Rwandan-backed M23, said its fighters "decided to assist the population of Bukavu" in addressing its security challenges under the "old regime".
