A powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake has struck off northern Japan, injuring 23 people and triggering a tsunami.
The governor of Japan's Hokkaido prefecture said on Wednesday he has approved the restart of Hokkaido Electric Power's Tomari nuclear power plant in northern Japan.
Japan is assessing damage and cautioning people of potential aftershocks after a late-night 7.5 magnitude earthquake caused injuries, light damage and a tsunami in Pacific coastal communities.
The Japanese Meteorological Agency said the quake struck off Hokkaido and issued an alert for a tsunami of up to 10 feet.
