A rookie driver for a brand new team has won the pole for the Indianapolis 500. Robert Shwartzman became the first Indy 500 rookie to qualify on the pole since Teo Fabi in 1983.

Shwartzman, making his first-ever oval racing start in any series, tops IndyCar heavyweights with a four-lap average of 232.790 mph.

Israeli-born IndyCar driver Robert Shwartzman won the pole for the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, then used his platform to ask for peace in both the Middle East and Eastern Europe.

Josef Newgarden didn't get a chance to make a run for the Indianapolis 500 pole position, so he went for a run. The two-time defending race winner was spotted jogging Sunday afternoon at Indianapolis Motor Speedway not long after his car and that of teammate Will Power failed tech inspection.

Twelve drivers have a chance at the pole position on Sunday, and four others are still trying to earn a spot in the race.

Qualifying for the 2025 Indianapolis 500 got underway on Saturday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Alex Palou posted the fastest time in qualifying with a speed of 233.043 mph, narrowly edging out Scott McLaughlin (233.013 mph) and Josef Newgarden (233.004 mph).

Last year’s qualifying weekend for the Indianapolis 500 was the first of a two-part coronation for Team Chevy as its drivers captured the top eight spots in time trials and went on to score a 1-2 finish in the race.
