Shanghai has relocated more than 280,000 people since Tuesday night as a safety precaution, China Central Television (CCTV) reported on Wednesday, in anticipation of heavy rainfall with the arrival of a tropical cyclone in eastern China.

In the Pacific, forecasters are watching five systems, including Hurricane Iona and Tropical Storm Keli. Iona has strengthened into a major hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 115 mph about 790 miles south-southeast of Honolulu, Hawaii.

Southern Taiwan is picking up the pieces after Tropical Storm Co-may unleashed torrents of rain, triggering floods and landslides. Entire communities have been forced to evacuate, and daily life has ground to a halt as schools and businesses shut down.
