The United States will officially open a new air defence base in northern Poland on Wednesday, as Warsaw seeks to reassure citizens that NATO guarantees their security amid jitters after Donald Trump's presidential election victory.

REDZIKOWO, Poland (Reuters) - The United States opened a new air defence base in northern Poland on Wednesday, an event the European nation's president said showed the country was secure as a member of NATO even as Russia wages war in neighbouring Ukraine.

"The Polish-American alliance is strong, regardless of who governs in Warsaw and Washington," Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said.

A long-planned US missile defence base was officially opened in northern Poland on Wednesday. The military base in Redzikowo is located about a hundred kilometres west of Gdansk and is part of NATO's missile defence system on the continent.

Poland has inaugurated its first permanent US military installation in the town of Redzikowo, located near the Baltic coast, according to a post on the Poland Ministry of Defence’s X account. This Aegis Ashore missile defence base on Polish soil has been in development since the early 2000s and is part of Nato’s broader missile defence strategy.

On November 13, the United States opened a new missile defense base in Redzikowo, a town in northern Poland near the Baltic Sea, as reported by Reuters. Polish President Andrzej Duda said the new base reinforces Poland’s security as a NATO member,
