Muslims in Naples are marking the start of Islam's holiest month where they will fast for 30 days from dawn until dusk while giving charity.

Many religious fasts coincide with what would once have been periods of scarcity. In this way, fasting served a purpose for millennia. It could serve a very different purpose now.
