Rotel has launched its first ever headphone amp, the DX-3 – and as you'd expect from the brand, it's packed high specification into its very small footprint.

Rotel pitches the DX-3 as the "ultimate desktop audio companion", and we can imagine its compact footprint will appeal to many of us who want high-quality hi-fi kit but are short on space. It measures 7.6cm x 21.5cm x 24.7cm – which is only a little bit bigger than the WiiM Ultra streamer's size.

Rotel is a more-than-60-year-old Japanese hi-fi company best known for its high-end amplifiers catered to serious audiophiles. And while its newest amp stays true to that ethos, it also marks a “first” for the storied brand.

When it comes to applications, the DX-3 can act as either a dedicated DAC or a fully functional preamp; the unit provides balanced XLR and RCA outputs, allowing it to directly drive external power amps, active monitors, or a full rack-based music system. The Rotel DX-3 retails for £1,399 (€1,499 / $1,499).

Even if space is at a premium, music lovers still insist on high-quality sound from their audio systems. The new Rotel DX-3 promises all that at a sensible price.
