I own a 1996 Chevrolet Lumina sedan, it has intermittent starting problems, I have had it in the shop several times and it seems to be the passive security system that is failing. My Lumina (98 with 3.8) would stop blowing air, hot or cold regardless of the ventilation switch setting or fan speed whenever the engine was under load (not w/o throttle,map sensor over 23). The fix, for my car anyway, was to replace the vacuum line to the vacuum reservoir.

I have a '99 lumina 3.1, if I leave the car parked for a couple of days the battery will go dead and have to jump start the car. Replaced the battery about 2 months ago with a new one and the problem is still there.

I just had the whole unit off that houses the backup lights. I've never seen the whole unit end to end light up on any Lumina around here (Ontario). The backup bulbs go into an enclosed plastic unit the blocks the light from escaping outside of the 2 white squares. If there is a Lumina with the whole trunk lid unit lit, I think it was custom.

Have the 3.4 (DOHC) engine checked thoroughly before you buy the car. This engine was discontinued by Chevy, and with good reason.

thanks makes sense,with that said i agree that its most likely not an interference motor and after a [non-permissible content removed] ton of googling i found that the 92 gm 3.1 has dished pistons therefor giving more clearance,im about to get the cain guide ,chain and both sprockets changed next week,ill let you know for sure next week
