On this day in 1965, Marvin Gaye's hit single "Ain't That Peculiar" was released on Motown's Tamla label. Miracles guitarist Marv Tarplin came up with the initial melody for the song while the group was touring Europe for the 1965 Motown Revue. The rest of the group—including Smokey as writer and producer—quickly fleshed it out into a full-blown tune, and decided Marvin Gaye would be ideal to record it. Gaye's ability to make the song his own resulted in an R&B chart topper and top-10 pop chart
