Long Island’s Indigenous peoples have lived in the region for at least 10,000 years. In 1659, they were dispossessed of Plum Island. Descendants of those dispossessed are stakeholders in envisioning the island’s future use and management. Making Plum Island a National Monument would enable careful study to help us discover and celebrate both the ancient and the recent past and help guide long-term preservation of Indigenous people’s culture and heritage.
