The Leipzig Bach Competition was held for the first time in 1950. One of the jurors was Dmitri Shostakovich. He was so inspired by Tatiana Nikolayeva's interpretation of The Well-Tempered Clavier that he himself composed a cycle of 24 Preludes and Fugues (Op. 87).
