Ronald Erwin McNair was a physicist and one of the first African American astronauts to go into space. He died at the age of 35 during the launch of the Space Shuttle Challenger on mission STS-51-L in 1986. McNair graduated from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical (A&T) University.
