Johannes Brahms began sketching his Violin Sonata No. 1 in G major, Op. 78 in the summer of 1878 while vacationing in Carinthia, completing it the following year. Also called the “Rain Sonata” for its use of motifs from a song he had written earlier (“Regenlied”), the work was the first of three violin sonatas composed late in his career.
