The male baths at Herculaneum in Italy. This was all buried under metres of volcanic material during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. 1st-century AD bronze Hydra fountain from Herculaneum, the town that was buried during the AD 79 eruption of Mount Vesuvius. The fountain stood in the centre of the swimming pool of the palaestra, which has been partly excavated but is still mostly buried. It depicts the five-headed serpent coiled on a tree; the mouths of each head sprayed water into the pool. A replica now stands in the area of the pool where the original was found; the original is on display in the Herculaneum museum on site.
